Passport Photo for Competitive Exams (NEET, JEE, CUET)

NTA-conducted exams — NEET UG, JEE Main, CUET UG and PG — share a common upload portal with strict photo, signature and thumb-impression sizes. A wrong-size photo is the most common reason applications get returned. This page lists the current NTA upload spec and how to produce all three files from one short photoshoot.

NTA photo with name and date caption

NTA portals (NEET, JEE Main, CUET) require the candidate's name and the date the photo was taken printed at the bottom of the photo itself — not as a separate field. Photos without this caption are rejected at upload.

Our editor's NTA preset adds the caption strip automatically. Type the name exactly as written on the application; use the date of the photoshoot, not the date of the application.

Signature and thumb impression rules

Signature must be in black or dark-blue ink on plain white paper, photographed or scanned, then cropped to a 3.5 × 1.5 cm strip and saved as a JPEG under 30 KB. Left thumb impression uses the same crop and KB cap — never the right thumb, and never a fingerprint card.

  • Photo must have name and date at the bottom (NTA-specific)
  • Signature in black or dark-blue ballpoint only — no pencil, no marker
  • Left thumb impression, not right
  • All three files in JPEG, never PDF or PNG
  • Same dimensions as printed on the NTA information bulletin for that exam

Backup printed photo for the exam centre

Carry two printed copies of the same photo to the exam centre on test day, pasted to the admit card per NTA's instructions. The invigilator matches the printed photo, your face and the digital photo on file before allowing entry.

Frequently asked questions

What is the NEET photo size?
10 KB – 200 KB JPEG with the candidate's name and photo date printed at the bottom.
What is the JEE Main photo size?
Same NTA spec: photo 10–200 KB JPEG with name + date caption; signature 4–30 KB JPEG.
Why is my photo rejected for missing caption?
NTA requires the candidate's name and date printed at the bottom of the photo itself, not as a separate field.
Can I use a PDF for the signature?
No. Only JPEG is accepted for photo, signature and thumb impression.
Do I need a thumb impression for all NTA exams?
Yes for NEET and JEE Main; CUET asks for it on most variants. Always carry both thumb files just in case.
